So how many of us love wireless? The question should be who doesn’t love wireless and the answer would be noone because everyone loves wireless!
So you just got yourself that Linksys WRT54GS that was on sale but are noticing the painful signal strength… what do you do? You get a nice little piecce of firmware called HyperWRT.
WARNING: HYPERWRT IS BY NO MEANS SUPPORTED BY LINKSYS! THIS IS NOT COVERED BY YOUR MANUFACTURER’S WARRANTY!!!
The Linksys routers don’t use the best strongest wireless chipset but also don’t use the worst either. The problem with linksys routers is that wireless is set to only 50% by defualt! And linksys does this for security reasons.
HyperWRT is opensource firmware that unlocks hidden features of the router. Simply install it as you would with any firmware upgrade and viola! You have many more options to set, the most important one (for me atleast) being the strength of your wireless signal. Boost it all the way up and you should be good. How is this done?
Very simple. Log into your router as usual. Open up the Wireless tab up top and click “Advanced Wireless Settings”. Here you will find a lot of settings that you probably won’t need, but also “Transmit Power”. As you see this really is defualted to 50%! This is something linksys does for security. I think if your wepkey is hard enough to crack then you don’t need to worry about this! Just bump it up to 100% and you’re good to go! Now you can access your home wireless network from that coffee shop that is 4 floors down!
Happy wireless adventures everyone!
